You need it whenever you want to address an object (i.e. hide, show or move it programmatically) or for a storage object like [pattrstorage] where the objects are the “clients” and stored with their name.

So in one sense it’s like using patch cords without using patch cords…you can set values, change attributes, etc. without needing to actually connect to the object…it’s like magic!
