I’m wondering if anyone knows a way for recording large amounts of raw data
with jit.qt.record. I’m hitting the 4gb limit after about 2 minutes
(640×460). Due to the way the video is generated, it never looks exactly the
same, so I need to record in one pass. I’m thinking about using multiple
instances of jit.qt.record, switching between them while recording, but I
doubt if this is the best solution.

The 4Gb limit is caused by the way your HD is formatted, in your case
probably fat32. A HD fomatted as ntfs does not have that limit. (it
does have a limit, but that’s way higher than 4 gb)

I ran a test last night with Randy’s render node. I made an eight minute
recording at 720×480, 29.97 FPS DV. It came to just over 1 GB. I’m on a G5
with 4GB RAM OSX 10.4.7. My disks are formatted HFS journaled.
Cheers,

Right now I’m exporting raw frames, converting to h261 afterwards, cause I
like the quality control. but maybe I better use a codec right away. Using
ntfs is a solution, but my biggest hd is formatted as fat32 for mac
compatibility. I just have to think about what’s practical.

that sounds about right .
Uncompressed video takes around 2Gb per minute, which would around
4Gb for the two minute test Thijs’ made.
DV takes up roughly 220 Mb per minute so that sort of fits with your
8 minutes.
