I’m wondering if this would be possible – to add a layer of inaudible timecode to a digital file which could be decoded at playback by Max.

Might sound like a strange request but I am wondering if this could be a way of timestretching clips and yet retaining the original position of each portion of audio.

In this way I could warp a video files in Ableton Live and use M4L to play the relevant portion of the video file.

Although my ultimate aim is related to Live/M4L I thought this forum was as good as any to post as it is a general audio/Max question.

If anyone has any input it would be great

well im not sure, but you are limited by your sampling rate to what you can add where.. i dont see why you couldnt look at adding some information above the audible hearing range, but i think you’d have to be careful of adding unit impulses, im a bit rusty but i think they dont necessarily manifest as just a unit impulse.

I don’t really know anything about it, but there are digital watermarking techniques that perhaps could be used to do something like this.

This journal article may have some info that would help: http://spiedl.aip.org/getabs/servlet/GetabsServlet?prog=normal&id=PSISDG003657000001000342000001&idtype=cvips&gifs=yes&ref=no

Hopefully you are at a University or there is a library near by you to get it free.

Very interesting papers around the web about Dither modulation, indeed. Thanks for the link, roth.
