There’s an SDK available at Cycling’74.com.

Yeah, go to cycling 74.com->Support->downloads->Max/MSP->Current x version (where x = your os). There, download Max/MSP 4.5.5 Software Development Kit (SDK). Inside is a pdf called WritingExternals, that’s the one you need.

But you also need this guide: click on Max/MSP Universal Binary SDK Documentation (unlike the previous one this link is not a file but a new page). There, download the Universal Binary SDK. Then start reading that page. Copying An Example Project is where you actually start making your own external.

Phew. Just in case you don’t get there by yourself (which I can imagine).
