I have an idea for a patch that involves writing data to an external server and pulling data from it. It would mean pulling data, checking it and writing it depending on certain things. Also it would mean keeping a record of different users of the patch.

Basically it would work as an online high scoring system for a game I'm developing. I'm hoping this wouldn't be too horribly complicated to implement.

I don't have much experience with it, but I'm assuming that using an online database would be the best method. I've been searching for anything relating to Max and MySQL and found a fair few links to related objects and things on Maxobjects.com, but they all seem to be broken.

I found this thread too which looks very promising

I have most experience with C, but could probably learn enough of Java or another language to make this work.

Max has a version of SQLite in it and there is also an ftm.sqlite implementation

ftm.sqlite looks promising. But is there a way to write directly to a database stored on a server or can it only be done if it is saved locally?

As to this being possible.. Quite possible. Java has (semi-) native support for MySQL through use of a JDBC driver. So it shouldn't be too hard to write an external in Java for this.

I could imagine setting up an object which uses 2 inlets; one for extractions (look ups) and one for additions.

There might be other ways but this is how I'd do it.

That looks like the right sort of thing. And actually there is a version for C too, which would be perfect for me -
