Word Sequencer

March 20th 2012
My Macbook Pro Laptop

I go to Berklee College of Music and major in Electronic Production and Design. Last summer I began to work earnestly, entirely on my own, designing a word sequencer in Max/MSP which words are used to create unique musical patterns. My intent was to invent a new and creative way to operate a sequencer. Unlike traditional step sequencers, where the user must manually input the pattern, in my program, words can be typed in that will produce rhythmic patterns all on its own. There are, literally, endless possibilities of different letters forming words in the English language. With the sequencer I designed, through the use of common vocabulary, whether it be someone’s own individual name or the name of an everyday object, this in itself, will generate its own distinct musical pattern based on the combination of letters and selected musical pitches.
The challenge of designing such a program worked to fire my imagination. All of my efforts were devoted to the task of working both day and night, over the summer, in the EPD labs, in the quest of making this idea a reality. Languages and codes have always intrigued me, basing my idea of the word sequencer on the same principles of Morse code. Through constant and continual trial after trial, I finally brought my idea into fruition. This program now represents to me the most important accomplishment I have achieved thus far. It is significant to me because it represents an inventive, new, and entertaining approach in the realm of application, in which musical patterns can be made from the use of words.

How was MAX used?

Designed in Max/MSP.

Nice work man, simple mechanism but amazing idea.

You’re an EPD student too? I just had my senior showcase yesterday! I’ll have my project here in a week too.
