Student and Education Discounts

Cycling '74 offers discounts on Max/MSP/Jitter to qualified students and teachers, and educational institutions.

Max/MSP (without Jitter) is now a retail-only product, no longer available for educational institutions or students. Max/MSP 5 student and academic upgrades include Jitter.

Qualified students and teachers must e-mail a valid ID to student@cycling74.com or teacher@cycling74.com to receive access to the online store discounts. Educational institutions must e-mail eduorder@cycling74.com to receive a quote and place an order, instead of using the online store.

Please note: Turnaround time for reviewing the IDs and sending passwords is longer than usual, as a result of our recent Max 5 upgrade release. We appreciate your patience.

Student Ordering Tips

Students are a large and important part of the Cycling '74 user base, and we are glad to extend reduced rates to currently enrolled customers who can provide valid student identification.

The student discount for Max/MSP and Jitter is considerable, but before we get you up and running, there are a few simple hoops we do need you to jump through (submitting your ID, ordering, then authorizing).

Here are some tips on how to get your order processed as quickly as possible:

  • Introduce yourself. When emailing your ID, type your first and last name somewhere in the body of the email. Sometimes the "wear and tear" of the ID card makes it difficult to read. This also helps if you are one of our many international students whose ID is not in English. By including your full name in the body, we are less likely to make a mistake when entering it into our database.
  • Keep it small. Digital photos and scans (jpegs, gifs, etc) are great way to send in your ID. When doing this though, make the image file small (maximum size 400 pixels wide). We get a lot of ID's, and the larger the image files, the longer it takes us to process your request. A good rule of thumb: The picture of the ID shouldn't be bigger than the ID itself.
  • Faxes! You are more than welcome to fax a copy of your ID to us (+1 415-974-1812). If you do this, please be sure to print your name and email address LARGELY and legibly on the fax. If we can't read your name and email address, we can't send you the ordering information.
  • Remember our business hours. We receive a lot of ID's from students every day from all over the world, so it can take some time to enter each student. If it's been more than 1 business day since you submitted your ID, please email or call us to let us know. We appreciate your patience, especially during the start of the academic season. Also, Cycling '74 is closed on the weekends. Our regular business days and hours are: Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, Pacific Standard Time.
  • Have an expired 9-month authorization? Want to keep using Max/MSP and Jitter? Please be aware that the 9-month authorization is not renewable. If you've ordered it once, please don't try to order it a second time.

Instead, if your 9-month authorization is expired and you would like to buy a permanent version, you can do so for $39 off of the normal student cost $250 (if you are still currently enrolled as a student).

For information on getting this $39 discount, please email student@cycling74.com.

Education and Teacher Discounts

Cycling '74 offers most of its products in 5-packs, 10-packs, and single copies to educational institutions, including those outside the U.S. All licenses sold under this discount program will be registered in one name or company name, and cannot be transferred or resold to other individuals.

Teachers can receive discounts by emailing in their Teacher ID to teacher@cycling74.com. Licenses sold to teachers with this discount are personal copies and will not belong to the institution.

  • Schools may not sell to students unless they are an authorized reseller.
  • If a school is buying software for a teacher, the teacher's name must be noted along with a message indicating it is for the teacher's personal use.
  • Departments at schools are considered separate customers. They cannot combine orders to get better pricing, unless all copies are listed under One Department Name and One Contact Name for that department.

How To Qualify For The Teacher Discount

To qualify for the teacher discount, you must hold K-12 or higher education faculty credentials. We will need a copy of the credentials, identification, or a letter from a department head.

Sorry, this discount is not available to people who teach occasional workshops.

Teachers should email a scanned image (small gif or jpeg only) of current teacher credentials or ID to teacher@cycling74.com, or fax it to 415-974-1812 (write your name and email address clearly on the fax).
