Why can't I get the digest version of the Max list anymore?

When we created the new Cycling '74 website, we needed to make a decision about the future of the digest version of the mailing list. We decided not to continue it. In a nutshell, here's why.

1. Digest-like behaviour is readily available for those who are inclined to adopt "new" technologies such as Atom feeds and the like. For example, if you have a cycling74.com RSS folder in Netnewswire or Thunderbird, you may scan the headers once a day, or whenever you like in the same way you would scan the contents of a digest email.

2. Digest subscribers are the worst offenders when it comes to excessive quoting and meaningless subject lines/busted threads. Forum maintenance and tidying is already a big enough job for us as it is without the extra overhead of tidying up a whole pile of digest noise.

3. We realised we needed to be both backwards compatible with the mailing lists as much as possible, while presenting new alternatives to people. This means that there needed to be some glue to merge the activity on Fudforum with the activity on Mailman. Integrating digests into this scheme was not technically straightforward.

Please let us know if you really must have the digest form and why. We're not promising anything, but we are happy to consider requests.
