Using radiaL with External Controllers

Does radiaL support the Zzyczbrnx MIDI controller?

You can configure radiaL for parameter control using just about anything -- MIDI continuous controllers, MIDI note numbers, the keys on your computer keyboard, or any videogame controllers or joysticks that supports Apple Input Sprockets. We've included built-in support for the CM Labs Motormix, and you'll also find controller templates for Peavey PC1600 and the Doepfer Pocket Dial.

If you want to use another controller, radiaL includes a Control Map interface that lets you easily configure and save your own controller maps. For more information on this, see the radiaL manual.

I don't own any external MIDI controllers. Is there any hope for me?

radiaL lets you use your computer keyboard as parameter controller sources. Many users enjoy hours of fun without the need for external hardware, although it does appear that new radiaL users develop a sudden and intense interest in external controllers.

I want to set up my copy of radiaL to work with my MIDI controller. How do I figure out what a specific parameter is called?

radiaL's Control Map window contains a listing of every single parameter in radiaL that you can control. While some people actually enjoy the act of scrolling through this list in the hope of discovering something subtle and interesting, you can always consult Chapter 6 of the radiaL manual. It lists every parameter by name according to the radiaL window it's associated with.

I want to use more than one source for controlling radiaL parameters -- my Motormix and my keyboard. Can I do that?

No problem -- radiaL's Configure window lets you choose the number of MIDI controllers you want to work with. And the Control Map window lets you choose any input source you want. Mixing and matching keyboard commands and controllers is simply a matter of clicking on an input source to select it.

I don't know what my controller is sending. How can I make a Control Map?

radiaL can "learn" your controller. just click on a parameter you want to control, and hold the mouse button down while you wiggle the controller. The control number will be filled in for you. There is also a MIDI monitor to look at the incoming stream of information.

I'm having a little trouble deciding which of the control maps I created for my setup is going to be the one I use. Can I create slightly different copies of maps for my controller to test them out?

Yes. Once you've created your personal controller map, you can save it as a text file you can reload from the Control Map window, and you can also load and edit that map, giving it a new name each time you tweak it. One of the interesting things about working with radiaL is the pleasant process of creating your own idiosyncratic interface to the program.
