radiaL's History and Background
Who created radiaL?
jhno, a.k.a. John Eichenseer, a musician and engineer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. The project started some five years ago as tool to expand DJ capabilities. He has been performing with radiaL professionally throughout its development. For more info, google jhno or Delicate Ear.
How does radiaL compare to Ableton's Live?
Both programs let you mix audio loops and apply changes like time-shifting, pitch-shifting, filtering, and effects. radiaL is oriented toward working with these treatments in real-time, while the music is playing. When using Live you will spend more time preparing what to do in advance, before the music starts.
The design of the two programs reflects very different musical ideas and priorities. You may find you prefer the Live approach some times and the radiaL approach at other times. People own and use both programs. We think Live is great, but it did not influence radiaL's design. We started showing off radiaL before Live was publicly announced. By then, radiaL had already been in development and use for several years.
