Since frequency is exponential rather than linear, using a simple slider never gave me good results for doing things like setting filter cutoff frequencies.
The mtof object is perfect for this use. The ability to work with floating point values means that you can produce smooth filter cutoff values by sending the mtofobject a floating point value between 0. and 127. for cutoff frequencies between 8.176 and 12541. Hz.
