1/4" to midi possible?
A dumb question I'm sure, but....
If one has a foot pedal, such as the Yamaha FC4A (i.e. a pedal which has a 1/4" jack), is it possible to get the signal without the use of the piano/keyboard? I noticed on the spectroscope that when I depress the pedal while plugged directly into my 1/4" jack, I get a little amplitude spike near 1 hz or something. Does anyone use some kind of threshold to detect this? Or would something like this work?
All I want is to be able to receive a bang or 127 from my foot pedal without having to go through my 88-key keyboard to get it.
you can patch it, or use something like this http://www.tecontrol.se/products/usb-midi-pedal-controller
Or carry with you a very small/cheap midi keyboard with sustain pedal input.
Pressing a pedal switch just shorts audio Input to Ground,
and creates a short click in Audio, but that depends on
the way Audio Input is dc decoupled, ( meaning if there is
any voltage left on the input).
That makes it unreliable as trigger detector,
it might work on one Audio Interface, and than not on the other.
One could insert a little cell battery, with a small
resistor and capacitor to create short voltage spikes in the pedal.
If You want that, I could post a simple schematic.
yes, a simple schematic to get me started would be great. I'd rather go this direction than the other suggested possibilities.
As soon as I get home I'll post You some schematics.
Do You want just a Tap detector, or also release ?
I mean monitoring On/Off from the pedal ?
That would make a difference.
tap detector only. just need bangs. thank you!
Arduino
I would also prefer Arduino solution, but here is Audio Trigger option, as You wished.
You only need 1- 1.5v batery cell and 1 resistor in series
to limit the voltage current, 100k or higher.
1.5 volt cell could even fit in a Jack together with resistor.
If You plan to use this modified Pedal with keyboard again,
You must remove the cell and resistor.
Maybe put it into Jack female/male combo with short cable ?
Here is max patch for detecting pres/release and drawing:

thank you
Here is another idea - if Your Audio Interface has Midi, one could use voltage from pin 4 on Midi Thru or Out connector.
