I am helping a student with a Max4Live device to control feedback in a hardware resonator module.

The module's audio output is plugged into the soundcard's line input 1.

The Ableton project has an audio track monitoring line input 1. Audio input is visible in the track's input level meter.

This track has the custom max4live audio device, which is envelope-following the plugin~ signal and deciding based on this whether to raise or lower the MIDI volume of the hardware resonator.

Raising/lowering works fine when playing audio clips in the track, but the line input signal seems not to be reaching plugin~.

I imagine many users would like to use max4live devices on live input so I suppose I'm just missing something. Any ideas what that might be?

If the device gets input in plugin~ from audio clips playing in the track then the device is working fine. 

It sounds to me like you don’t have the track’s Monitoring mode set correctly when you’re trying to get audio from your interface. You would want “In” and not “Auto” if I understand your setup.

Yeah, that's probably it. A/ I'm only an occasional user of Ableton and B/ this was at the end of some 6.5 consecutive hours of production lessons (apart from a lunch break) and my brain was already switching off.

Thanks for confirming that there's no weird restriction with [plugin~].

It's a cool device that the student is using -- a Wingie 2 from Meng Qi. The catch is, if the resonator frequencies are being held stable and the volume control is high enough, feedback will build up. This is an attempt to ride the MIDI CC volume control automatically.
