Sorry if this is documented in the API or elsewhere, I haven't been able to find it.

When creating a max external in C, is there a way to customize inlet and outlet hints (or annotations, or comments, I can never remember the difference). I'm most interested in the text that appears on mouseover, which defaults to something like "I am inlet 0", etc.
