Combine umenu text items into one message?

I've searched through the docs, and the forums and couldn't find solution to what I'm trying to do.
The problem...
umenu is loaded with an unspecified number of text items.
I want to put those text items into one long message.
Join won't work because you have the know the number of items beforehand.
Any ideas?
