I'm a new Max user and as some of my first projects i've decided to make some midi editors for some of my hardware (A DSI Tetra and a Strymon Big Sky and Timeline). Everything works fine but i'm looking for some advice on what the best practices/most efficient way of doing things would be. I initially started just hooking up the outlet of live.dial to a prepend object (with the corresponding CC# as an argument) and sending that out to a midiformat object which would in turn go to a midiout object. In order to have the software dials reflect any changes made on the hardware I created a midiin object and connected a midiselect object (with the CC# as an argument), an unpack object (with a prepend set object) to the inlet of each corresponding live.dial. I realized later that I could also have done all this with ctlin and ctlout objects, which is what I did for the next editor I made. It definitely makes for a neater patch but i'm wondering if one method is better than the other for any other reasons? I also eventually learnt about the send and receive objects and was wondering if there is any disadvantage/penalty to using a a large quantity of these objects in a patch.
