Can anyone recommend a good compact external USB sound card (stereo but 5.1 would be nice as well) that will be able to deal with a wide range of frequencies? The card will be connected to speakers rather than headphones. I'm creating work that uses high frequencies, granular synthesis etc. and my computers built-in card isn't handling it very well.

I don't know about surround things, but it seems Babyface can handle it.

I use RME Babyface which is very stable.
And very good sound quality.

Recommendation noted although perhaps a little out of my price range. Need something a little more cost effective as these will be used for installations works (plural) rather than one for performance.

Focusride has a very good price-performance ratio.

Nice, watching some demo videos of it on YouTube.

Maybe you can look up for a Tascam audio interface, you need at least 6 Outputs for your 5.1 setup, this one might do the trick.

I have looked at the Tascam US-322 (only stereo) - good reviews. The one you recommend looks good but not compact or portable unfortunately. Not really what I need.
