file names truncated

    hello.
i have attempted a few ways to try and find a solution to this problem. many apologies if this has been covered, i was unable to find a solution in the archives.
basically, if i want to populate an umenu or coll with the contents of a folder, and a file name in that folder is longer than, oh let's say 40 chars, the filename gets truncated and appended with a # and some random letters and numbers, followed by the file extension.
this happens with both the folder object and the javascript folder.filename property.
also this only happens on the mac, it doesn't occur on windows.
if someone can tell me a way around this i would be most grateful because the truncated filenames are useless to me.
    many thanks.

31 char limit has come up a few times in the past, don't know if
there is any move to lift the limit (legacy code and all that) -
      sorry this isn't any help.

ahh yes, i knew i saw that post at some point.
i suppose i couldn't find it interleaved with the other post.
for my dj patch, it's important to see the whole name. otherwise it's really not a problem. (the patch functions fine)
does anyone know if this plagues intel macs as well?
has anyone had success overcoming this with shell?
i may give that a shot...
      thanks.
