...exepted that I'm on Intel mac : so no shell UB yet, as far as I know.
I tried with aka.shell, but it just says in the max window :
"aka.shell: no result"
and... no result.

the phrase 'tell application "MaxMSP" to activate' is AppleScript
so it will work with tap.applescript from http://www.electrotap.com/
which is UB (and highly recommended)
another approach is to use a shell script that runs outside of max,
open "/path/to/your/standalone.app" ;
I use this as a watchdog script, it will open the app if it is
closed, and it will put it
in front if it is already open.
it hardly takes any CPU cycles as the shell script sleeps most of the
