Got Graphics ??

    Jun 04 2008 | 1:15 pm
Hi friends , just wondering if any of you had any idea where one could download pre-designed Knobs , sliders , vu meters switches ect.... to use within MAX , I would imagine this must exist somewhere !
Reaktor community have extensive database of vintage knobs of all kinds ect..
Which make me wonder , could one import these very same Reaktor Graphics within Max ??

You sure can, If you can export them as jpegs you can load them
into pictctrl. You may need to use photoshop to arrange
the button subtypes so that they are in the places Max expects them. Here is one for you to try...

On second thought, it looks like you can not export knobs from
Reaktor. The batch of vintage knobs that were up loaded to the
user library are in a format that photoshop does not understand.
Any idea what they may be?

Have a look at the helpfile for pictctrl to see whether the Reaktor images will adapt well to Max.

In looking at some of the knobs in the Reaktor library, I stumbled on
this tool, Knobman, that will likely help for creation of Max/MSP
      knobs too:
There's also one that's been around for a while, RLH:

Knobman rocks! This is the first time I have played with it.
It even does faders, which is awesome cause I can't stand the
Max horizontal fader and there is no equivalent jsui version.

Does any one know if pictrl supports png files?
    • Jun 04 2008 | 9:00 pm
pictctrl should support any Quicktime supported file type, including png. A full list is here:

Yes, though in the past, on Windows, you needed Quicktime installed
(for any file format other than .pct). Not sure if that's still the
case in Max 5 (haven't tested yet), but my suspicion is that it is.

The reason I ask is because I want to do transparency
      with a png file...
Whats odd is when I try to load a pictrl with a jpeg it
works fine. I then reload the control (same settings and all)
with a png version of the image and Max says...
      pictctrl: can't find file C:/audio development/Max/knobmantest1.png
Well it is definitely there, along with the jpg it just loaded!
    • Jun 04 2008 | 9:19 pm
Assuming the images are in your Max filepath, try saving the patcher
after you've changed it to point to the .png, then close and reopen
the patcher, or perhaps even quit and restart Max. I had the exact
same experience earlier today (we've been trying similar things today
Anthony!), and it opened fine after the restart.

      Yes, definitely need QT installed.
There does seem to be something going on regarding search paths and pngs, which i'll look into.
In the meantime, a workaround seems to be just moving your png files to a valid Max's file path.

Is there anything like these apps for OS X?
Also, are there any tutorials out there that deal with GUI design in Max? I'm wanting to make some GUI-fied versions of some of my patches for live use and I'm a little stumped with how to create some of these multilayered image formats to create visual feedback on knobs and buttons and such. Any suggestions?

There is an article currently on the front page of the Cycling '74 website about patcher UI updates that you might find useful. I'm currently working on Part 2 of that, which will include things like image overlays, tabbed interfaces, and custom UI graphics.
      Best,

Oli Larkin has a jsui javascript on his site that uses png files to make knobs. Check it out: http://www.olilarkin.co.uk/index.php?p=max.

I tried at again, this time putting all pictures in my Max
path. This time it worked, png transparency too! But I must
say, Max should not complain that it can not find a file when
I am explicitly telling where it is.
