Help with game of life?

I would like to create a version of game of life that works with a reactable style interface using reactivision...
I would like it to be quite pleasing to look at graphically, so if Quartz Composer or Processing could be used in conjunction then that would be great...
I was just wondering how easy something like this would be?
Does anybody have any suggestions for how this could be done? Where I could start?
I'm not even sure how I could program "Game of life" within max to be honest... So any help at all would be greatly appreciated!
I look forward to all and any replies...
    Thanks!

As far as coding the rules of the game into max, I have a feeling it would be a lot easier to use Javascript for that part of the patch. Max wasn't really designed for that purpose, so making a patch to code for the rules of a non-trivial game would be... messy.
