I've asked both mackie and digi for the hui protocol many times. it's aparently top secret.
I think I've got a patch emulating the motor mix including the displays etc. if your interested. -matt

Lo and behold, everyone just reverse engineers the MCU or googles: http://members.aol.com/mhigrules/MCMap.htm I have even confirmed that certain un-named software companies have implemented Mackie Control support without even getting to first base with Mackie - so everything's possible.
I did a lot of the groundwork to figure out the specs for users wanting to hack about with the midi in Ableton Live, it's really easy once you take a crack at it. and mackie can't do anything to prevent that, since it's just basic midi. I think there's a bit of overlap between the MCU and the HUI, so the above link might provide a good starting point for faders, knobs and buttons.
      Best, Andreas Wetterberg.

I found a PDF spec of the Logic Control protocol, and it worked pretty well with my MCU. I've got some MXJ code for it that I never got round to polishing up, if it's of any use.

For instance (quick flip through Ableton Live manual:) Cursor Up - Ableton Live: Session View - Navigate up - midinote C 7 Zoom - Ableton Live:Session View - Launch currently selected Clip - midinote D#7 etc. and so forth.

      hello,
apologies in advance for this mundane question; but, i've tried too many different scenerios and always the jit.externals are not being recognized by my application. am i missing something so very obvious?
      thanks,
      zehn

i know this post is quite old, but i am doing a bit of research on the mackie HUI protocol and this thread looks like it might be useful... anyone know why most of the posts appear blank?
      thanks

haha ok, i guess that makes sense...
maybe i'll start a new post about this then, cos i might need more info on Mackie HUI protocol. but first, i need to look into other options.
