icons with opacity

I know this isn't quite a max question but I am trying to make a nice icon for my applet, does anyone know how to use transparency in icons? so that part of the icon is opaque and the other has an alpha. I tried copy paste in photoshop with alpha layer but didn't work.
    Thanks!

I've used Apple's Icon Composer with very good results. It's part of their Xcode Tools package.
There's a nice tutorial on Mac Dev Center:

awesome, this is a great plugin! Love it
Also on a similar note, is it possible to use alpha with the intro screen pict?
also how do I get the apple development kit? Do I have to order it? I saw that quartz composer somewhere and it looked cool.
