identifiying frequencies from a signal

i've been looking through all the tutorials but i can't figure out how to get the freq from an audio in signal.
for example, if a piano sample is played, i want to be able to identify the freq. so if you hit A above middle C it should display the number 440.
can anyone give me any tips?
    Thanks, Ed

It would be great though if someone made a neat msp patch version of this. I'd probably pay more for a bundle of this kind of abstractions than for a bundle of externals with the same functionality. Hmm, actually, that sounds nice.. I might just start that project myself.
