Sorry if this is simple, I'm having a headache trying to figure this out.

I want to have a popular song playing on a loop and the amount of bitcrushing and distorting effects applied to the song will vary depending on how many seeders and leechers are connected to the torrent of that song.

I have a .php script which can scrape the number of seeders and peers connected but I can't figure out how to get the numerical result of the script into Maxmsp in order to use the numbers to manipulate parameters.

2) do you have any advice on how to go about it?

3) is there a much simpler way i'm overlooking?

You can push the data to Max via OSC. There are some php OSC libraries/classes out there in the web. Long time ago i did that in a project but i don't remember which library i used. this is probably most suitable if the the server running the script is on the same machine or inside the same LAN so you don't have to open ports in your router/firewall and you don't need to deal with address forwarding.

Another option would be to expose a URL/ RestFull path containing your data and you could pull them from Max with the new-super-awsome [maxurl] object. This approach has the advantage that your php server and the Max computer easily can be anywhere within the www.

Another option is to use a free demo account from pubnub.com and a java external that i put into the max tools: 

check the the pubnub api for their php implementation. in this approach the server and the max patch can also be anywhere in the web and you don't need to expose anything publicly. (the demo site mentioned in the help file of a JavaScript example is offline right now. but if you ha e questions just ask me)

or just write the data into a text file and open it with max
