I was wondering if the max runtime has something like a global registry of instantiated objects to facilitate easy lookups, i.e. like python's 

After some testing and also searching the forums for the above methods, I am going to summarize my understanding (which is likely incorrect):

1. There is a global object registry provided by the 

void ob_register(t_ob *x, t_symbol *s) {
    object_register(gensym("myspace"), gensym("me"), x);
    post("object registered");
}

void ob_find(t_ob *x, t_symbol *s) {
    t_object *obj = (t_object *)object_findregistered(gensym("myspace"), gensym("me"));
    if (obj) ob_bang((t_ob *)obj); // bang when found
}

 registry which is based on a 'hashtab' or HashTable data structure.

The common use of this method is to retrieve the patcher (#P) and box (#B) objects:

object_obex_lookup(<t_obj> *x, gensym("#P"), &patcher);

You can then iterate over its children with an iteration function to do something to each child object (like scan for their name or 

So my question: is the above correct? Are there indeed two user-facing object registries?

After reading the sdk,  I found the  "object_obex_lookup", and "object_register" methods in ext_obex.h). 

1. There is a global object registry provided by the object_register and ilk methods, such that this works:


 2.  The object_obex_lookup method reads from theobex registry which is based on a 'hashtab' or HashTable data structure.

t_object *patcher = NULL;
object_obex_lookup(<t_obj> *x, gensym("#P"), &patcher);

You can then iterate over its children with an iteration function to do something to each child object (like scan for their name or varname).

So my question: is the above correct? Are there indeed two user-facing object registries?

Without addressing the warnings about storing the pointer (in my question), after some additional testing, I was able to 'successfully' do lookups with

    object_register(gensym("myspace"), gensym("me"), x);
    post("object registered");
}

void ob_find(t_ob *x, t_symbol *s) {
    t_object *obj = (t_object *)object_findregistered(gensym("myspace"), gensym("me"));
    if (obj) ob_bang((t_ob *)obj); // bang when found
}
