I want to recompile my mdegranular~ external with the latest MaxMSP API. Xcode is an almost 8GB download and disk hog. Is xcode really necessary to compile external objects written in C or can it be done on the command line with gcc (surely)? Best, Michael

Hi Michael - I think using XCode is the way with the least hassle on macos, but you could check out the 

 which suggests, that it is possible to build on the comand line with cmake (you would probably still need the xcode cli tools)

Aside from the 8GB and related hassle, I have loathed the Xcode experience for years and have been avoiding it as much as possible.

At least 12 months ago (maybe Catalina has broken this now, haven't tried recently), I was able to complie externals from the command line with just clang. That required the Xcode "command line tools" installed, but that is a much smaller download without the Xcode bloat.

I spent a few hours turning that into a node-gyp project (the build tool used by Node.js), which was very convenient for me as a regular Node user, and less fickle than writing shell scripts.

You would need to adjust for paths etc, but here's what worked for me:

clang -x c++ -arch x86_64 -std=c++11 -stdlib=libc++ -isysroot /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/MacOSX.platform/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.14.sdk -std=c++11 -stdlib=libc++ -I../../max-sdk/source/c74support/max-includes -F/Users/grrrwaaa/Documents/Max\ 8/Packages/max-sdk/source/c74support/max-includes -framework CoreServices -framework CoreFoundation -framework IOKit -I/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/CarbonCore.framework/Headers -framework MaxAPI example.cpp
