When sending long URLs in mailing list or forum postings, please also include a tinyurl -ized version. For example: http://tinyurl.com/e8b34

but what if tinyurl goes under? or gets bought out by some company that drops the ball and breaks the tinyurl-ing? plain links are more future-proof than tinyurl. Mail programs will get better at recomposing long URLs. 'Til then, delete, delete, delete, select, copy, paste -- voila! it is restored! :)

In general any very long URL isn't one which lasts long anyway. Usually you would need them anyway only for temporary links. Links that should last long are more like www.mywonderfulsite.org/downlaods/filename which would not need a tiny url...
Tinyurl is god for posting links to ebay/amazon articles and alike.

      Not for now:
"As of Feb 13, 2:17am, Dreamhost has disabled the url(x) MySQL database due to abusive traffic. I'm going to have to add some throttling functionality in here. In the meantime everyone is going to have to sit tight. Sorry for the inconvenience."

Besides having being disabled since Feb 13, in what other ways is this site better than tinyurl?
