first make sure you can get signal into the presonus first - try a cd player or something.
can you see the levels from that in max?
then confirm that your preamp is working properly by connecting it directly to your hi-fi or whatever lets you hear things thru speakers.
make sure your cables work.
basically, what I'm saying is first confirm the hardware functions properly, then try to get some signal of any type into your computer, then get that signal into max (check your drivers and DSP settings). then, synthesize your knowlege and you will get the results you desire.
thanks for your quick response. I am sure that I am getting signal through the firebox, but when I open ms. pinky's maxi patch I don't see any signal in that bottom-most box. I have set the audio settings to the firebox. Another strange thing is that when I am in maxi-patch or QT control I get a lot of "no such object" messages.
where should I drop the maxipatch folder? Is there a search path folder within the max/msp folder in my applicatopns folder on my harddrive? Sorry if these are dumb questions. I'm new to max. Thanks for your help.

You didn't tell us what you did, beside reading the docs and tutorials
(you did, didn't you?)
It should work, didn't have any problems with that box...
