No DLS Synth in midi setup

Hello, I've been using Max 4.5 on the university iMacs on Panther 10.3 for a while. Recently i installed Max 4.3 on my G4 iBook, Panther 10.3.9. I can't get any midi sound, the built in synth doesn't show up in the midi setup. I can't find any sign of it on My HD either. I reinstalled both OS X and Max to no effect... Is there something I'm missing, please help.
    many thanks johnny

      Max 4.5 and later required.

Hard-coded inside OSX, you can't find anything on your HD. What you can find in any AudioUnit host software is called "DSLMusicDevice". Strangely, the Mac version of Max/MSP has still no AudioUnit object like the vst object.

      The "fluidsynth" object:

All I want, at this stage, is a midi click to use with the metro object. Are all users of Max 4.3 and below expected to use an external synth for something so basic?

another workaround for you would be to use simplesynth -> http://pete.yandell.com/software/#d0e92
