i'd like to produce a serious of midi notes in metrical timing but without having to rely on a [metro] because i'd actually like the duration of the note itself to determine when the next will start--immediately after, that is.

the underlying problem are unintended pauses (or overlaps): so, for instance, if my first note has the value 2n and second 4n and the third 2n again and i'd use a [metro] with 2n, there'd always be a gap of 4n between the second and the third. how can this be avoided?

I don't understand the problem really, if You want the note OFF

to trigger next note ON, than You just need to programm

On the other hand, You could send note OFF for 

sustaining note whenever new note ON is sent.

like send 144 120 88 to midiout, when new note ON arrives

it sends first 144 120 0, than new note ON value.

That would make notes sustain independent of tempo

or whatever timing You use to run sequences.

Only at the very last note one has to set the length limit somehow.

thank you, source audio, for your answer: i see what you mean but then my question would be: as i’m working with the [makenote] how can i make it happen that only every second message, which is the note-off message, is to trigger the note-on message for the next note? or would you recommend to use another object?

thank you, doubleug, for your answer as well. it’s a very good suggestion which doesn’t quite suit my needs, though, because firstly, from what i’ve seen it doesn’t work according to the metrical timing displayed in the message box. and secondly, it only works according to the [counter] and not randomly (which i didn’t mention that it’d has to), doesn’t it? 

i’m actually after something else which i’ll take the liberty to explain in a few words: i’ve got a score in 5/2 which i would like to fill out in any rhythmical order by means of quarter, eighth and half notes. the number of actual notes that go into this space of this 5 half notes, however, is variable. so, taking only 5 notes, it could be 5 half notes or 4 half notes, 1 quarter note and 1 quarter rest and so on. taking 6 notes, though, we’d have 4 half notes and 2 quarter notes and so on. as you can imagine there are many different patterns that can come up and i don’t know how, firstly, set them up and, secondly, manage them in a randomised way making sure they still fit into the 5/2 bar.

if you (or someone else) has got any idea on this, please let me know.

If You want to stick with noteout, You could use flush object.

Here is a simple patch. It bangs flush object before any note gets sent out.

That way any note that is sustaining will be turned off.

Only thing here is to find a way to turn the last sustaining note off

when sequence stops or there are no more coming notes.

That is easy to do, when one knows which the last note is,

or one could set a max duration which then turns any note off
