I'm using Max 7.1 I'm trying to turn a sequencing patch I have into a collective. I eventually am thinking this could be an iOS app.

I have one main toplevel patch and within that 2 subpatches that I want to have open when one launches the collective. There are patch cables between the various windows, but I could do away with them and use send and receive objects. I opened the two suppatch windows and saved them as separate files. I went to file/build collective and for toplevel patcher I selected the files of my subpatchers. I built this into a collective.

When I opened the collective all the window opened but they didn't interact with each other. Like they were three different patches, but the send and receive objects between them worked.

Here's my question: Should I just have three different toplevel patchers that work together with send and receive objects built into a collective? Or, is there a way to select a subpatch window ( or two) within a toplevel patch as a second toplevel patch?

I guess conceptually I am hung up on this because it seems like it should all come from the same patch and not 3 different patches, even if the end result is the same. I checked out the Collective Editor in the documentation and didn't see an answer.

Which is kind of old, last post from May 2015. But I guess I learned that Max patches can't be an iOS app. I guess I thought the first time I read through it that it was possible, but I am mistaken. If there has been a change in the status of this please let me know. Maybe I will release what I'm working on in the App store anyway.

Is it possible for me to create a main patch that can use another patch within it (as a plug-in) to expand the functions? In my case, I'm building a dj system that will include audio effects which will take longer to create. It would be awesome if I could write an effects plug-in that I can select to include, from the main patch.

Yes that's totally possible and i am guessing quite common, like a delay sub patch, reverb, pitch shifting or other such effect. You might want to consider making a new post on this if you have a more specific request for help as others might see it and chime in or give you suggestions, as posting in this topic might not get you as many responses.

Thank you for your reply and that definitely answers my question :) It was stupid o'clock at night when I wrote it and I was half-asleep so, well deciphered! I'm still developing the system at the moment and am just thinking ahead as to what capabilities the system can have. Will make a new post for help when I get to that stage as I'll probably need all the help I can get :)
