Having a lot of trouble implementing this idea. I have a filter made in gen~ which is constantly fed partials from sigmund~. It would like to create a patch that will take the last X numbers are and average them out so that a more or less varied stream of partials are being sent to the filter. I've tried this using zl.stream, zl.sum and a / object where the number box controlling how many numbers are streamed out also controls the / object's right operand. The only issue is everytime I change this value there is a delay for calculation. Any ideas on how to implement this more economically and practically?

if you know the maximum number of partials you would ever want to look at, you could have a zl.stream set to the maximum, and then have that going into a variable zl.stream,zl.sum,/ configuration, like this.
