segemented patch cords

I'm doing the tutorials for MSP and have been reviewing the tutorials for MAX.
For example, as practice I'm trying to create the graphic found on page 31 of the Max45 Tutorials and Topics pdf.
When I set it up and use the shift-click for segmented patch cords I can't get it to STOP patching. I've tried shift-clicking again to make the cord stop, option-shift, control-shift, etc. If I use command-shift, all of the connections are deleted.
I presume that the diagram is complete and there's nothing else to terminate the last connection. Is there a key stroke I'm missing. The original tutorial doesn't indicate one.
    Thanks

escape key will also get you out of patching mode.

And most importantly: option-click will undo only the most recent node.
A special prize goes to whomever can cite chapter and verse where all
      these gestures are documented.
They *are* documented, it's just finding 'em when you need 'em is
      sometimes tricky.

Julien nudges out Emmmanuel by a mere seven minutes to get in the
first response. EJ's answer gets a bonus point for being most
convenient, complaints that "Patchers aren't real documentation!" are
      overruled by the referee.
For pure excitement, who needs Germany/Ecuador when we have contests
      like this one?
