I have Max 7.3.4 and I try to use the serial object in a patch. Whenever I open the patch is says:

patcher attempting to load itself: serial.maxpat

perhaps you have mistakenly named a patcher file the same name as an object it contains. this is not permitted.

Last time I just copy/pasted the info from the help file. What gives?

You should check you patcher name. It should not be "serial".
