How exactly does interpolation differ from cross fading?

It’s probably context-dependent. There are many high-level posts in the forum which discussed this thread. Some of them are beyond my scope. But there was one eye-opening post or video (i can’t find it anymore) which stated: 

A crossfade and an interpolation between 2 oscillator waveforms are mathematically the same.

`mix` is linear interpolation, which is also the default mode for `interp`. The inlet ordering is different though. And yes, this is exactly the same thing as crossfading (so long as your mix/xfade/interp factor is between 0 and 1, that is).
