i have a Really Big Client.
RBC would like me to make a live jitter animation in which two movies
of resolution 1920x720 are blended.
the first machine purchased for the project was an xp32 machine:
computer is a graphics workstation built by boxx (http://boxxtech.com)
using a Tyan S2696 Tempest i5000XT motherboard, #D1798-120 Revision
1.2. Processor: 4 dual 2.0Ghz Xeon processors. gpu is an nvidia
quattro FX 1700.
playing 2 photojpeg/high/25fps compressed files, mixing in gl with
co.average.jxs and using @colormode uyvy and the cc.uyvy2rgba.lite.jxs
shader resulted in a 15fps result in my jit.gl.videoplane
@transform_reset 2. that's basically unacceptable. the movies are
both playing off of a RAID 0 drive system, which took a split second
to copy 150MB. i don't think the bottleneck is the hard drive.
using the same method, without the uyvy conversion shader, on my 2.16
core2duo macbook pro (it's got a geforce 8600M GT), boosted me up to
as far as i am concerned, nothing less than 30fps is going to be
really acceptable for this project, and i'm going to look quite bad in
my client's eyes if i don't pull this off.
i spec'd out the new mac pros, and i found out something interesting
from one of the apple store geniuses: the baseline graphics card for
the new machines- the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT- is not going to be
substantially faster at all than my macbook. the 2nd tier card- the
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT- will be a screamer, but this card is not going
to be available *anywhere* for 4 weeks. and i need to build this
system in a week. the top tier card- the $2500+ plus NVIDIA Quadro FX
5600- is basically too much money even for the client.
so i am in a bind. i am getting incredibly bad performance from a
machine i originally believed would be up to the task, and a machine
that i am now certain can do what i want it to do will not be
available to the market in time. i would prefer that the total cost
of the setup not exceed $3500 US.
can anyone (josh? anton? wes?) make a rock-solid recommendation for a
system/motherboard/GPU/programming technique which will be able to
help me with the results i need?
