i'm about to start work on a m4l audio effect based around freezing an incoming signal into a loop, and modifying parameters afterwards

i want sidechain midi input to control the period of the loop, so that it is always a musical division, for osc sync effects at audio rate, or for audible clicking on lower rates (choosing a different loop period multiple to the fundamental note period on the incoming audio)

i want to be able to change the pitch of the carrier audio in the 'buffer' without changing the period of the buffer, (again for sync effects)

i want also to be able to scan backwards and forwards to parts of the sample that might be outside of the 'buffer' at rates different to playback rates

i also intend to have windowing options for hard vs soft sync

presently i'm thinking of making a sort of circular buffer, but it seems a bit clunky, and i wonder if the sound is going to be malleable enough inside a buffer, is there another approach that would work better?

if anyone has tried anything similar and can offer some advice for areas to explore then please do!
