808 noise generator

June 25, 2006 | 11:39 am

hi

i kind of remember than some time ago (1 or 2 years??) someone (from
C74 as i remember) posted a patch emulating a 808 (roland)
cymbal/hi-hat noise generator…

can not find it anymore….

does someone have it? – or point a hint as how it was made (i think
the original was made with pulse generators – but how much, how were
they tuned etc etc)

many thanks

best

I can remeber that thread, looking for drum and synth in the archives
would show up something, but I think you refer to a different patch.

To redo it yourself you should have a look at the tutorial from Frank
Barknecht "Building Drums in PD" Should be easy to translate it to Max.

I have a version of it that i modified for midi input, recording, and
some fft analysis (i think). i can’t seem to find the original, but
if this version isn’t slightly too messy for you check out:

cmb808.pat is the main patch. is this what you were looking for?

Cheers Micha, unfortunately the link you posted does not exist anymore. Does someone has the patch form jhno? Or any other patch hi-hat/cymbal related? (possibly 808 style).

I’m trying to recreate a Hi-Hat sound (and I like the 808). Currently I’m working on the closed one, I’ve done some research and figured out the concept, however I do not know much about synthesis in general, so I don’t know if it’s the right direction. Someone’s up for suggestions/patches that I can dissect and learn form?

P.S.: Thanks LISTS@LOWFREQUENCY.OR for your sharing, it’s interesting, but not quite what I’m looking for!

You can also take a look at the circuit schematics and the repair manual. You might be able to plug some of the component values into an online oscillator calculator. I found some useful information in there when I was building my M4L device AnalogKick.
(AnalogKick is not an accurate model in the sense that it doesn’t use a Bridged T oscillator–this could be approximated with a filter on the edge of self-oscillation from what I’ve heard but I’m interested in the flexibility of the inaccuracy–but the envelope timings were useful, IIRC.)
