it takes 48 h to recover my powerbook after i made an attempt to
update computer from osx 10.4.6 combo to 10.4.7.
i downloaded that 10.4.7 combo update directly from apple’s website.
then i pushed installation button and nearly at the end of process
installation window said something like "installation error… blah
blah blah". i tried 2 more times. then i figured out that system was
already broken. and at the end of the day (night) i found my self
reinstalling completely all system and all programs.
in my experience, if a software update fails, its indicative that the
machine being updated had issues prior to being updated, like messed
up permissions, bad sectors on the drive, etc.
But Apple has definitely messed up in the past wrt OS updates. I
always like to wait 2 weeks. Apple also has this odd habit of
removing updates AFTER posting them, and putting in slightly new ones
which fix small things they missed in packaging the update.
Apple to revise 10.4.7 Delta Update pkg for Intel Macs to include
missing OpenGL files – Yesterday’s news had a note/link to a World of
Warcraft Mac Tech Support forum thread on missing OpenGL related
files in the Intel Mac 10.4.7 delta update, recommending Intel CPU
Mac owners install the 10.4.7 Combo updater. A note in Apple’s
security mail list today confirms this and says they are going to
release a revised 10.4.7 (delta) update package for Intel Macs to
include the missing files:
yes I am a huge nerd and follow these developments :)
