I am just curious as to whether anyone knows a good place that does tutorials on algorithms in music and in particular Max. Im talking really about the area of generative music and beats.

Improvisor was built in Max/MSP. It's a very simple generative music composition tool which uses note patterns you already have and recombines them in various ways to create new note patterns.

seriously, i would start using objects such as [* ] and [+ ] and see what they can

do to note events - it is already a ton when combined in the right way. :)
