Audio file visibility in MaxMSP Runtime
I’ve been using MaxMSP to build demos for my class on the nature of
sound. For some of the demos, I use sound files (aif files from the Max
distro: cherokee.aif, anton.aif, etc) via buffer~ and play~ objects. I
distribute the patch and aif files to my (over 100) students in a zipped
folder. They unzip the folder, then use MaxMSP Runtime to run the patch
file. Each time, a large number of students complain that the sound
files don’t work within the patch (usually they notice that the Max
window reports something like "cherokee.aif: can’t open") . My
assumption has been that MaxMSP can’t see the aif files for one reason
or another, and I’ve been through many possibilities with the students
(trying to open the .pat file directly from a zip archive without
extracting, saving the .pat file in a different location from the .aif
files, etc) and in many cases my suggestions have resolved the issue.
However, a number of students (not all) still seem to be unable to use
the sound files (the patches themselves work fine) even when all the
files are stored in the same extracted folder, etc. As far as I can
tell, there is no clear pattern based on operating system or computer
type, but things work fine for me (and for most of the students) under
both Windows XP and OS X. They are all using the same version of the
I’ve been assuming that if the .pat and .aif files are located in the
same folder, the aifs should be visible to the patch. What am I missing?

In my experience – bombproof can be an elusive target….
Having said that, what you said sounds basically right.
Would it be possible for you to make up a small demonstration patch showing us what it is you are trying to do so that we might download it and have a try? That is probably the only why we shall be able to help you. Or maybe you have the actual collection you sent you your students available for download somewhere.

I bet its the following: They extract it, everything is within a folder,
they move the folder into the search path. So far its what they should do.
But if Max is still open, it will not include the new folder
automatically into the search path! They would have to either quit Max
and restart, or explicitely point to the folder in the search path
The other option is: They should have a general dump folder and just
place all the files directly in there without its surrounding folder.
Let me know if that gets you going…
