audio game question
I’m a complete beginner with MAx and I’m in need of a quick bit of advice
from some of the knollagable people on this list. I just need to know if a
particular task is A, possible with MAx MsP and B,
is it reasonably easy to create, especially considering I’m very new to the

I’m putting together a simple audio game that enables players to listen to a
recording of a situation where they need to use their ears to make a
decision. They then press either left or right on the computer keyboard to
make that choice. They’re then fed the audio result of that choice.
What I want to happen is for the original sound to be triggered by pressing
the space bar then a different sound to be triggered depending on which key
they then press, either the left or right arrows. To make the transition
smooth ideally the audio would need to cross fade.
To me this sounds pretty basic considering the massive power of MAx, but as
I said I’m a Lerner. Any advice much appreciated.

I’m sorry I didn’t explain fully. I don’t yet own a copy of MAx MSP. I’m
investigating this before purchasing it. I did have the demo running but my
30 days ran out. I’m assuming you have to have a fully working max msp to
run the tutorials?
I don’t know if I’m a knowledgeable people here, but what you want
sounds not that difficult. The best advice, is to start with the
tutorials. You’ll find *all* you need there in general, and
particularly about what you want to achieve.

Theese are very straight forward tasks with MaxMSP…
What you want to do is pretty straight forward in Max/MSP.
How straight forward for you depends on how fast you learn. A lot of
what you need to know is covered in the Tutorials (partic. Max Tut.
20 Using the Keyboard; MSP 18, with some adaptation, will help).
One way to go would be to work through about the first two dozen Max
tutorials, skim through the rest to see what they’re about, then
start with MSP, going back to Max tutorials later as needed. That
*is* work, but in the process you’ll get your game and have a
foundation for lots of other projects.

The 30-day demo would have been fine for the tutorials, too.
You can run all the tutorials under Max Runtime, it’s just you won’t
be able to pull them apart and rebuild them, which is where the real
learning takes place.
Too bad, as your project could have easily be done in 30 days (more like
1 day, but for going through the tutorials you’d need some extra time).
You should have asked that on the first day… ;-)
