I've played with a max a bit before, but what I am trying to do is well beyond what I know already. I want to create a patch that outputs data, ideally in a list form or a graph.... if thats possible in max?

I guess it somehow involves fft.... but thats as much as I can figure out so far. I want to be able to load a song sample, and to get a list of the frequency content of the audio... ie. not just the fundamental, but also a list of the most used frequencies... (even all of them?) present in the audio?

Any idea of even where to start with this would be greatly appreciated!

I'm still using max 6 if that makes a difference too....

Not very specific in what you need but as a start you might take a look at the Ircam FTM externals and possibly seek out a working Mpeg 7 max implementation.
