distorting a matrix by movement, like writing in sand

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out what the easiest most effective way would be of achieving this. the principle is that a mesh of evenly distributed points would get deformed by a person wading through it, pushing the points away when he approaches the points of the mesh.

I've attached a picture to explain better. I am hoping that someone could set me on the right track here

I’ve come up with a solution of some sort, which I can experiment with.

I ran into another problem though, I wanted the field to return to its initial non-deformed state, so I need some kind of water-like dampening.

However I can’t seem to get it right. I’ve looked into the pool nurbs patch for inspiration but that is not really working.
I guess I need some kind of matrix feedback, but cant figure out how to implement this.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!
