I’m a new MAX user and I’m working to create a user friendly browsing interface. I’d like to re-create a sort of “file browser” starting from the contents of a umenu object: when a umenu fills up with elements (autopopulate from a given folder with files), instantly a number of fpic and ubutton objects appear on different part of the patch panel in presentation mode: the fpic are images associated to the audio files in the folder.

Example: in the folder you could find “lion.aiff” and “lion.jpg”. I would like to let the user browse on images more than text.

In theory, I think that I have to load the folder elements (using object coll) with the audio files and pictures that have the same name. My problem is to link the fpic objects to the corresponding audio files so that one can press on the fpic image and immediately hear the corresponding sound.

Not entirely sure I understand, but you can place a [ubutton] on top of the fpic. The button is transparent, so you will only see the picture, but when you click on it, it will send a bang which you can use to trigger the audio file.

For each item in the umenu, you'd need an fpic and an sfplay~ which all auto-load when the umenu is populated. This can be done by automatically running through the whole umenu and loading everything based on their file names. Then the ubutton over the fpics will send a 1 to the sfplay~ object which will start playing the file. If you make the ubutton behave as a toggle you can start/stop.

This would be a great place for using bpatcher too, rather than duplicating a cluster of objects. Because you don't know how many items will be in the umenu, you really want to be able to accommodate all of them without restricting the limit. Look to scripting messages to thispatcher in order to create new bpatchers on the fly.

It will take some fiddling but is totally doable. Would make a very nice image-based browser for sure!
