I realise that if a device is inside a rack,

[path this_device canonical_parent canonical_parent canonical_parent]

will need to be used in order to get the track that the device is on

But how do I get max to determine whether the device is inside a rack or not?

This works when the device is not inside a rack

Is there any way I can combine these together?

I thought about using if statements and also "can_have_chains" but not sure where to start really

This patch gives the track number regardless of whether the device is inside a rack or not.

I'm trying to use the patch in the last post to determine the track number.

I've pasted the patch into a blank midi device, made the number field visible in presentation.

The number remains zero if I drop the device into a track. How to make it work?
