I'm trying to get into granular synthesis within max. I have downloaded a few patches from around the net to see how people are making this stuff and a few (seemingly older) externals keep popping up: munger~, bonk~, sigmund~. I can't seem to load patches properly that use these externals (getting the orange tint over the objects which means they cannot be found?) and I have downloaded the latest versions. Are these externals working in Max 7 or are they too old?

Are externals needed these days for granular stuff or has Max been updated enough for you to work without these? Should I give up on seeing/hearing some of these patches and just work with what I have?

OK I've just found manger~ in the Package Manager under the PeRcolate bundle! I guess I am still curious as to what benefits the externals have over the standard objects.

Look in Max's help menu: Examples > sampling > granular > granularized

Here's something I've been working on (it uses gen~, which gives more flexibility for modifying the internals of the process if you want to dig in that direction):
