I tried using [record~ capture.1] and [polybuffer~ capture] but it doesn't seem to work. Will I just have to dive into creating a poly~ with a buffer~ inside?

Yes it is. You can create an empty buffer (message appendempty + duration to [polybuffer ~ MYPOLY]) and then record targeting the newly created sub-buffer ([record ~ MYPOLY.1], for instance).

polybuffer is nothing else than a number of buffers organised togeher.

you set one buffer instance within polybuffer for playback or recording,
