I've found that [adstatus driver] produces output in edit mode but not in performance mode. This could be used to detect if a device is open in the editor. It works for me (Mac OS10.9, Live 8, Max5) but may be not reliable on other (future) versions.

Is there an easy way to detect if device is open in the M4L editor?
